A lovingly made soft back catalogue filled with artists and creatives with wonderful eccentric passions, Propane is one that will leave you with a sense of escapism.
Profane Magazine, Issue No 8
It took me a while to get through this magazine as each time I read an article I wanted to take some time to think about the fantastic things I just read.
“Create, Collect, Enjoy.”
FYI if you search this magazine name, you may find your search results lead you to a plethora of gas sites, and maybe LP Gas magazine, especially is you type 'Propane', as I did, instead of 'Propane'. Propane is not that.
The style
This magazine is bold in it's voice which is reflected in its stong block colours.
The high quality matte pages can be flipped with ease as the soft back provides the abiltiy to bend the book with ease. It seems flimsy but it's not. Its a strong collective of different voices, mainly in an interview style, but with a non edited script, it allows the variety of opinion to hit you in the face as if you've been invited to sit down at a dinner party with strangers. It's quirky and honest although a little pretenscious - after all it is a French magazine about artists.
The content
The issue that sits on my shelf includes a ceramicist inspired by butchery, someone that creates human figures out of tissue paper, a collector of shoe soles and heels the family finds on the floor and an interview with an architectural company - of which I understood nothing of what was being said!
The audience
I think it's odd to say that there is a specific audience type ofor magazines. I think everyone should read a variety of material to gain a wider and deeper understanding of the world we live in. I'm not sure if I'll continue to keep this sub title in for that reason. In basic terms, this magazine is for those interested in art, and the eccentricities of people as it delves in the hidden passions of people around France.
"The journal that brings light to the amateur within you."
A final note
It's nice to hear these stories of people quietly being creative and making art for no reason other than urge, enjoyment or instinct. It's nice to know people are still doing things for no particular reason other than self gratification. There is no want to be famous, make money or even upload their creations on social media for some sort of praise and approval. People are simply making things. The pursuits are random and odd and unusual, and the answers do not make sense, but that's really cool, because they don't have to, and there is glorious sense of freedom in that.
